Policy for ADHD
The Georgia Tech Psychiatry Clinic, located in Student Health Services, provides general psychiatric services to Georgia Tech students and their spouses. This includes diagnostic assessment, urgent mental health evaluations, and medication management of acute mental disorders.

Over the past two years, there has been a steady increase in the number of students seeking evaluation of and treatment for Attention Deficit/-Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Providing services for this growing population has impacted availability of psychiatric services on campus for students with more urgent or serious mental health needs. In order to best accommodate the needs of the Georgia Tech community with the available resources, we have decided that, effective in Fall 2006, the Psychiatry Clinic will no longer perform diagnostic evaluations for ADHD nor will it accept new patients with established diagnoses of ADHD for medication management. Any student already receiving treatment for ADHD in the Psychiatry Clinic will still be eligible for treatment until his/her graduation. However, any new patient seeking evaluation or treatment of ADHD will be referred to a provider in the community.

It is important to note that ADHD can often coexist with other mental health problems such as Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, anxiety disorders, or depression. New students with established diagnoses of ADHD seeking treatment for a coexisting disorder will be eligible for services in the Psychiatry Clinic.

If a student is unsure of a diagnosis of ADHD, a diagnostic evaluation can be performed by a licensed psychologist or psychiatrist. For a list of providers that perform such evaluations in the Metro Atlanta area, please go to our Health Services webpage at www.health.gatech.edu.

Georgia Tech Health Services and the Psychiatry Clinic strive to provide affordable, quality care in a timely manner. Although we realize that this policy will impact many members of the Georgia Tech community, we anticipate that this change will benefit the campus by allowing for more timely service to students in crisis or with more serious mental health concerns. For students seeking evaluation or treatment of uncomplicated ADHD, we will be available to assist in finding appropriate resources in the community. We thank you for your understanding in this matter.
